Did you know that 80% of women wear the wrong bra size? You’re not alone if you struggle to find the perfect fit! A well-fitting bra is essential for comfort and confidence, but unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about bra sizes.
Common Misconceptions about Bra Sizes
Let’s start by addressing some of the biggest myths around bra sizes and fit. Here are a few persistent myths that often lead to women wearing the wrong size:
“A cup letter is the same size across all band sizes.” Many people think that a cup size (for example, a D-cup) is the same for every band size, like 32, 34, or 36. However, this isn’t true. Cup size changes relative to the band size: a D-cup in a 32 band size is smaller than a D-cup in a 36 band size. This means that a 32D cup has less volume than a 36D cup because the band is narrower. This explains why a larger band size combined with the same cup letter creates a larger cup. The cup letter is a relative measurement and changes with the band size. By understanding this, you can better estimate your bra size and choose a more suitable bra. You can learn more about this later in this blog post with the concept of Sister Sizes.
“If the bra no longer feels supportive, you should tighten the shoulder straps.” It may seem logical to tighten the shoulder straps if your bra starts to feel loose, but this is not the right solution. Shoulder straps provide only a small portion of support, while the back band provides most of the bra’s support. When the back band becomes too loose, it loses its primary function, which causes the shoulder straps to bear too much weight, leading to discomfort or even shoulder pain. Instead, try fastening your bra on a tighter hook (if the band has stretched) or, if the bra is too worn out, consider buying a new bra in a supportive size. A good bra should feel like a second skin without requiring the shoulder straps to do most of the work.
“A bra should always fasten on the tightest hooks.” This is a common misconception! A new bra should fit comfortably on the loosest hooks. Over time, the band stretches from wear and washing, allowing you to tighten the hooks as needed. Always start with the loosest hooks to extend your bra’s lifespan.
“A good bra size will always stay the same.” Unfortunately, this isn’t true! Weight changes, hormones, age, and even changes in breast structure can impact your bra size. Measuring regularly (ideally once a year) helps ensure you’re always wearing the right size. A good bra size evolves with your body!
“I’m allergic to underwires or can’t tolerate them because of pain and sores.”Many women think they’re allergic to underwires or avoid them because they cause discomfort and irritation. However, in most cases, the issue is not the underwire itself but wearing the wrong bra size—usually a cup that’s too small. If the cup is too small, the underwire can’t sit comfortably around the breast tissue and instead presses directly onto it, causing pressure, pain, and sometimes even sores.
A well-fitting underwire bra should have the underwire resting against the ribcage—between the breasts, on the sides, and beneath the breasts—without pressing into breast tissue. This allows the bra to fit comfortably and provide support without causing friction or irritation. Wearing the correct size often eliminates this discomfort and ensures that the underwires sit correctly without pressing on the skin.
Tips for Accurately Measuring Your Bra Size
Measuring your bra size correctly can make a world of difference in terms of comfort and fit. Rather than explaining all the steps here, I’d like to refer you to a free video I’ve created as part of our online lingerie course. The Concept of Sister Sizing: What It Is and Why It Works
Did you know that every bra size has multiple “sister sizes”? This means there’s another size with the same cup volume but a different band size. This can be helpful if you want a slightly different fit without changing the cup volume.
Example: Do you usually wear a 36C but feel the band is too tight? Try a 38B. Do you wear a 34C, but the band feels too loose? Try a 32D. Both options offer the same cup volume but vary in band width.
This technique is ideal if you’re not entirely satisfied with the fit but don’t want a drastic change in size. Here’s a helpful chart to guide you:
Tighter Sister Size | Current Size | Looser Sister Size |
30B | 32A | 34AA |
30C | 32B | 34A |
30D | 32C | 34B |
30E | 32D | 34C |
30F | 32E | 34D |
30G | 32F | 34E |
32B | 34A | 36AA |
32C | 34B | 36A |
32D | 34C | 36B |
32E | 34D | 36C |
32F | 34E | 36D |
32G | 34F | 36E |
34B | 36A | 38AA |
34C | 36B | 38A |
34D | 36C | 38B |
34E | 36D | 38C |
34F | 36E | 38D |
34G | 36F | 38E |
36C | 38B | 40A |
36D | 38C | 40B |
36E | 38D | 40C |
36F | 38E | 40D |
36G | 38F | 40E |
Note: This chart provides examples of sister sizes, but the sister size rule also applies to smaller and larger sizes than those listed here. Remember, the cup letter changes with the band size to maintain the same cup volume.
Why a Well-Fitting Bra is Important for Comfort and Confidence
A well-fitting bra is not only more comfortable but also boosts confidence. Here are a few reasons why it’s so important:
Less pressure on the shouldersBy choosing the right band width, most of the weight doesn’t rest on the shoulders, helping to prevent back and shoulder pain.
Prevents irritationWhen a bra fits perfectly, the underwires, cups, and band are positioned correctly without pressing into breast tissue. This avoids friction and irritation throughout the day.
